Ketamine was developed in 1963 by researchers from Wayne State University and FDA-approved in 1970 as an anesthetic and analgesic agent, and is now one of the most widely used drugs in modern medicine. It has been used safely in surgical settings, and now being utilized in managing acute and chronic pain conditions.
Ketamine infusion is now increasingly clinically applied as an off-label treatment for various chronic, treatment-resistant mental health conditions, including depression, alcoholism, substance dependencies, PTSD, OCD, and other psychiatric diagnoses. Leading medical centers including the Mayo Clinic, Yale University, and Kaiser Permanente have launched ketamine clinics across the country.
